for energy and serenity

When the mood strikes, I prepare this simple meal. It’s definitely not what Emeril would prepare in his kitchen. But then again, you never know. This meal is delicious and can gives energy and serenity. It works when you’re tired and want to sit quietly chewing easily, or when you’re hungry and want a boost.

NO RUSHING- IT NEEDS TO COOK SLOWLY. Begin with steel cut oats. I use Arrowhead Mills. Put in about half a cup, depending on the number of people waiting in line for this wonderful meal in a bowl. Add lots of water, filtered or bottled. Place on very low flame in heavy small pot. Stir often so that it doesn’t stick to pot. When you think it’s cooked to your taste, try it, add chopped organic calimyrna figs when it’s almost cooked. Stir a little more. Now, put into a beautiful bowl. Add about two spoonfuls of a good quality olive oil. This also to taste. Stir. Add stevia. If you haven’t tried stevia, use very, very little til you get used to the taste. This last part is totally up to you. Put in a bit of organic hemp seed butter. I admit, this is different. But, if you stay with it, it’s wonderful and good for you. Bring your beautiful bowl with its delicious contents to your favorite sitting spot; take small spoonfuls, chew well and eat slowly. Bon appetit.

the east river is choppy tonight . . .

It’s foggy and the East River is choppy tonight. Plenty of rain splashing everywhere. The wind screams. Sometimes loudly. Rain is not content to stay outside, there’s a leak between a wall and window in the apartment. Often need to wring three soaking rags to save the floor. Maintenance can’t come this week. The heat’s not on as filters haven’t been changed. It’s cold tonight. Boxes stand waiting to be moved when a new apartment is found. The night lights from boats coming and going on the dark river inspire. And sipping chamomile tea while watching the river quiets the mind. Placing blankets all around my body in the middle of the bed – a welcoming warmth settles in that spot. Nice! Said a soft prayer for people who are struggling tonight. Said a soft prayer of thanks. I’m not struggling.

“the messenger” says he knows

Reading and writing is not always a simple matter. There’s so much information “out there” that the mind tends to change beliefs more often than one is willing to admit. You read an opinion about something or someone sheds light on a topic in a way that you’ve not heard before, and you think, “That makes perfect sense.” And away you go with that bit of information until the next article or person comes along. Maybe it’s that kind of a world. There’s simply a lot of ways to think about everything. AND maybe all those ways contain their own truth.

Someone showed a book to me recently. It’s written by “The Messenger” and it’s about enlightenment and energy. The writer proclaims that upon reading it you’ll never ever view life in the same way again. Admittedly, I’m a sucker for this kind of stuff because I think, “Okay, shake up my world. Bring it on. What do you know that I don’t?” I don’t remember the name of the book, but when turning the pages of this one in particular I felt there are books on shelves far more outlandish, and those writers had the respect for their written words to use their names. Why does someone write a book, have it published, get it into book stores and go by the name “The Messenger”? Particularly when proclaiming a discovery that “. . .will forever change the life of the reader.” And even though I wasn’t interested in reading the book, I saw enough and had to walk off the ideas in that book. After looking at the book though I did think about the many beliefs there are regarding how people react to life. Maybe that which created the universe just wanted to give us choices, and one way is not necessarily better than another. I’ll keep that thought in mind.

to raleigh

Raleigh, NC is a place that’s rapidly growing! There are many from the northeast moving to different cities in NC. In fact, Cary, NC, an acronym for containment area for relocating yankees, is full to the brim with yankees. Sometimes I wonder how the natives feel about this. In Raleigh is a gentler way of living. The cashier understands that you need time to collect yourself after making a purchase, and the customer standing behind you doesn’t breathe down your neck while you do so. You don’t get hit with umbrellas on a rainy day either. Grant you, there are many malls, but they’re really pleasant to be in whether for browsing, reading at bookstores, serious shopping or eating. They’re downright pleasant. There’s no getting around it. Yes, I’m comparing the shopping experience to that of NYC where it can be disconcerting at times, although it’s much better than in past decades. Perhaps it’s unfair to compare NYC with any other place because it’s not any other place. And that’s the reason people come to NYC, but then, on the other hand, when you find a place that feels good, why not visit it once in awhile, at least in memory until you can be there physically.

There’s also the thing with iced tea refills, you get as much as you can handle. And it’s delicious. Could be the same with coffee. Michael has gotten too used to the south. The last time he ate at a coffee shop in Manhattan it cost him over $12 for iced tea. He kept nodding his head for refills and they were only too happy to oblige. The simplicity of it all is refreshing. I stayed at a hotel in Raleigh and the store on the premises had no saline solution for contact lenses so an employee drove me to a drugstore. Imagine that! Thinking on this has gotten me thinking. Maybe in the near future I’ll find my way once again to Raleigh for a little shopping and gentle southern treatment.

our world

Have you noticed that when thoughts of the November and December holidays begin to take form a good portion of our life revolves around those months. If not, physically then certainly mentally and emotionally, and then physically as we fall into the the commercial part in the form of buying which has become, or shall we say, taken over, the holidays. Of course, preparation can mean anything – depending on your lifestyle.

With all that’s happening in the world lately I think the joy of the holidays will have a special meaning. I’ve often read that underneath the chaos there’s order. If we can get pass all the tragedies, we can see the beauty that’s also unfolding. The love that goes out to those who need it in the form of money, food, housing, compassion and prayers is wonderfully alive.

I read Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda www.yogananda-srf.org quite a few years ago. There was food for thought in that book. I’m thinking of one paragraph now. It said that all the violence, negativity, greed, etc. affects the universe. Whatever is in the consciousness of all of us is felt by the intelligent universe. If we want order we need to stop the craziness because only a loving world will produce a loving environment. We’re producing chaos when we contaminate our world. I think about that book often and wonder about those words. He’s not the first or the last to write about this cause and effect applying to the mass consciousness.

“The deeper the self-realization of a man, the more he influences the whole universe by his subtle spiritual vibrations, and the less he himself is affected by the phenomenal flux.” – Swami Sri Yukteswar

“We are reborn each day-indeed each moment-and we begin afresh with the possibility of new perfection in every breath we draw.” -Rabbi David A. Cooper

“The modern world is desacrilized, that is why it is in a crisis. The modern person must rediscover a deeper source of his own spiritual life.” -C. G. Jung

“The more materialistic science becomes, the more angels shall I paint.” -Edward Burne-Jones

“There are very few human beings who receive the truth, complete and staggering, by instant illumination. Most of them acquire it fragment by fragment.” -Anais Nin

talking food

I’ve been thinking about getting back to eating more uncooked foods. There are a lot of books about eating raw and they are a great support system, and a great support system is needed to get very clear about what to eat and why. At the moment I’m reading three books that are informative, inspiring, very interesting and, I think, enjoyable reading. They are Eating for Beauty by David Wolfe www.sunfood.com , The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs www.mastercleanser.com , and Wisdom from the Monastery by Peter Sewald, Editor.

Last week a great French bakery on 20th Street and Ninth Avenue in Manhattan called to me. Everything is prepared at the cafe. Trust me; it’s all delicious. When I got back to the apartment where I’m staying, I picked up one of the three books and started remembering what it was like to eat raw. It’s really nice to go to a food shop and select your favorite foods thinking about taste only, but when you consciously plan to eat in a way that gives ultimate nourishment to body, mind and spirit, your life changes. I want to experience that feeling again. That feeling of seeing changes in my body, inside and outside, and having the discipline to take charge.

So I’ve been a fixture at *Bonobo’s on 23rd Street www.bonobosrestaurant.com where the ambiance is airy and conducive to enjoying fresh foods prepared in simple ways with an emphasis on being delicious and uncooked. The people behind the counter are helpful. You can sample before ordering. They’re patient and friendly. It will take a little time to get back to eating that way. I can still taste the delicious sandwich and almond croissant at La Bergamote, but I really want to eat differently and I’m heading in that direction now.

*It’s now 2013 and Bonobo’s is a restaurant of the past.

Change is good. Right?
