early mornings

Good morning! How are you today?

The days begin early in the neighborhood where I hang my hat because I’m across a narrow street from the Mercado San Francisco, and the people at the mercado work many hours outside selling scarves, ponchos, sweaters, blouses, dresses, bags, pants, alpaca blankets, hammocks, hats, and more, all in piles and piles. A lot of the merchandise comes from the Otavalo area, and guess where else . . . China. That’s not difficult to believe, although to some buyers a little disappointing – until they notice they still have a lovely scarf, or whatever else they bought. It’s hard to walk pass the mercado and not buy. One reason is the Otavalans working there beckon to the passerby with their easy smiles.

Also, the days begin very early because the entrance door to the building where I live is one flight of stairs from my apartment, and that steel door slams from early morning until late into the night. It’s another reason an alarm clock is not needed. This morning I decided getting out and about early with a camera would be entertaining and fun. And it was. I took this picture at the corner of Padre Aguirre and Mariscal Sucre.

In Cuenca, Ecuador every day is an adventure, learning Spanish, new people to meet, discovering new places, streets, museums, and where to have lunch for $2.50 – always learning.
And every day I sit, relax, breathe easily, and sometimes deeply, and read beautiful words, such as these tweets which today are:

“Live life fully while you’re here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You’re going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don’t try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.” ~ Anthony Robbins

“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” ~ Harvey Fierstein

Where thou art – that – is Home. Emily Dickinson ~ When you’re at home in your own skin, you can go anywhere and feel instantly at home.

“For introverts, to be alone with our thoughts is as restorative as sleeping, as nourishing as eating. Our motto: “I’m okay, you’re okay—in small doses.” ~ Jonathan Rauch

Make an assumption, misunderstand, take it personally, and end up creating a whole big drama for nothing. #DonMiguelRuiz

The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease. ~Voltaire

How do you want this day to be for you?

louise hay, thank you for the following

When we see words that are sincerely and lovingly written, having years of experience backing them up, they have to be shared.

Take time to ask and explore these simple questions:

What shall I now release from my life?

What or who no longer works for me?

What am I holding on to that holds me back?

What thoughts or beliefs belong to the old me?

How am I being unloving to myself?

Am I ready to let go?

What do I believe that really works for me?

What is going on in my life that is terrific and wonderful?

Where am I being very loving to myself?

Where am I most content?

Let me acknowledge myself for all the growth and change.

What do I want to bring to my life?

What do I want to create?

How do I want the next year to be?

Who do I want to bring into my world?

How do I want to look?

What image do I want to project?

How healthy do I want to be?

How prosperous do I want to feel?

How much love am I willing to experience?

What kind of world do I want to live in?

Where do I want my spirituality to go?

Affirm:

I know that where I am is the totality of possibilities . . . not just a few possibilities, but the totality of all creation.

I am not limited by statistics, medical opinions, time, or authorities.

I am one with the infinite wisdom and capabilities of the Universe itself.

All good is available to me, right here and right now.

All I have to do is to use the power of my thoughts to create that which I desire. I know that. Now let me live it!

wondering about all the medicinal plants and bottles at the mercado

Upstairs at the San Francisco Mercado in Cuenca in its own narrow, long aisle is a section of healing plants, and bottles whose contents look a bit mysterious – only because they’re unfamiliar. For someone who loves delving into alternative healing, it’s frustrating. Ahh, but I do know an aloe vera plant when I see one, and there it was, in abundance, in all its glory

20130828-205815.jpg

I’ll find out what those mysterious looking bottles and healing plants are all about . . . there’s a website, an enormously helpful one, called www.gringotree.com and I saw that someone named Alex gave an Andean Medicinal Plant Workshop in ENGLISH. Next time, guess who’s going.

Today I bought three enormous bunches of different medicinal plants for $2.00, for an injured ankle, from someone sounding confident in her knowledge . . . if only I understood what she said.

20130828-214107.jpgI know they’re supposed to be boiled in water. The questions are for how long? And how much to take and how often? And what are the names of those three bunches of plants?

How I wish the tutor I emailed for Spanish lessons would respond. It’s been said life is laid-back here in Ecuador, and that foreigners have to learn patience. There’s no doubt that there are more than a few opportunities in the course of a day to learn. It’s all good.

Sweet dreams all you who are off to bed. Dream big dreams!

Autism Awareness Month

Today kicked off Autism Awareness Month. While this issue continues to grow and affect families globally it is also getting the attention and focus necessary to at least try and keep pace with the huge number of people touched by this disorder. There are still many people slipping through the cracks and in need of help. The resources being put into the fight against autism are finally getting in line with the scope of this ‘problem’. However until there is some progress in being able to clearly identify the culprits it will never be enough and the battle will continue with many determined and good people fighting the good fight.

Educate yourself about this issue and see what you can do to help on a local level.

Cheers.

Man’s Best Friend

Charlotte
Charlotte hams it up!

Anyone who’s had a dog understands the important role these special beings play in a family. The pure and unconditional love of a family dog is something that everyone should be fortunate enough to experience.

Charlotte is 8 years young and every single day she teaches us about unconditional love. Whether sitting at our feet while we peck away at a keyboard and work. Greeting us at the door without fail every single time anyone comes home or making sure she is body to body with whomever she is sharing the couch with.

Pure love, friendship & loyalty about sums it up.

The Wilen Sisters

A few years ago I subscribed to a book written by Joan and Lydia Wilen called Bottom Line’s Secret Food Cures & Doctor-Approved Folk Remedies. All I can say about this book is that if you want to be entertained while trying to find relief via a natural cure for an ailment you or someone else has, you might want to consider getting the book. As you peruse it you’ll catch yourself smiling and saying “really?” every so often. The Wilen sisters are witty and have a treasure chest of information, plus, the calmness in the words they use make spending time looking for a cure absolutely delightful. It’s easy to get side-tracked when reading the book, and possible to forget the reason for reaching for it in the first place.

The natural cures are from different areas of the world, and the cures have passed the test of time, thereby making them worthy of consideration. As an example let’s find out what the Wilen sisters have to say about anxiety (which is the previous posting on this blog).

On page 175-178 under Tension and Anxiety are these: for sweaty palms, indigestion, stiff neck, hyperventilation, an ulcer, dry mouth, a tic, even a canker sore unwind with a relaxing hobby, e.g. sailing, gardening, etc. The natural remedies suggested are: take away caffeine from your life and also chocolate (I don’t want to hear that), don’t paint your kitchen yellow, use acupressure, take cayenne pepper, take a raw onion and make two poultices, a hop pillow for sleeping, a fish tank. and chia seed tea. In the back of the book are six pages of “Amazing, Super-Duper Facts and Advice,” four pages of “Sources,” a list of “Health Resources,” a “Recommended Reading List,” and a “Recipe Index.”

Now to find out why, where, and how, you’ll need the book ~ I really think you’ll like it.

May you enjoy Secret Food Cures & Doctor-Approved Folk Remedies as much as I do.

A Philosophers Notes – A great new site for spiritual expansion

I happened to come across a new site that I think is really worth taking a look at www.philosophersnotes.com

The “Chief Philosopher” of the site, the very well-spoken and positive professional, Brian Johnson, has put together a website with pdf synopsis’/mp3 audio clips and a plethora of other sections geared to providing information gleaned from 100 personal growth books. Johnson picked the 100 books mentioned, which date from history to present day, that he had found to be most influential. Many of the titles such as “The Four Agreements” and “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” are very recognizable, and Johnson’s clean breakdowns act as effective guides in highlighting key points. The nice thing about the breakdowns, is that they don’t act as replacements for the books, in fact, Johnson usually begins by saying something similar to “You must read this book,” or “Only read this book if you want to change your life.”
Think of it as sort of a book club/school for personal growth.

In addition to the book sections, Johnson provides individual segments on energy, courage, and more. The goal being to create a strong personal core for success in all parts of your life. There are also “Blissations,” subliminal messages you can have personally made for you. When it’s bedtime, check out the meditating sleep noise, such as ocean sounds (I am a fan). I’m glad to have come across this website. I think it’s a great boost during the day and a good way to see a glimpse at a number of powerful books, we may not have discovered on our own.

Have you used the site? We’d be interested in hearing your feedback, too!
